'The Old Library' is based on a live performance by Improvizone in Cambridge, UK. As the collective’s name suggests, this piece – which was the longest recorded that evening – was improvised. More accurately it was composed in two stages: firstly as it was performed, by musicians who hadn't played together as this group before, with no rehearsal or planning; then secondly during an extended post-production process to distil this final album-length recording. Nothing was added but a little was taken away to sharpen the focus – technical and artistic – for a repeated listening experience.

As Improvizone we had access to this beautiful looking and sounding space for the whole evening: the doors stayed open, and the audience came and went as they wanted to. Everyone – performers and audience – had the opportunity to get lost in the music. Such opportunities to create were precious two years ago. Now they seem so much more so, as we’ve learned to live with restrictions on travel and sharing spaces with others that have taken opportunities like this away for a time.

Dedicated to the memory of Ed Elloway, who supported the music he loved for as long as he could.
